William Sutherland, Associate Attorney and Director of Operations

Licensure:  Mr. Sutherland is licensed to practice law in the State of New Mexico and is a member of the Zuni Pueblo Bar.  He relocated to Santa Fe and joined Jay Goodman & Associates Law Firm, P.C. in 2005 where he is also the firm’s Director of Operations.

Education:  Mr. Sutherland earned a Juris Doctor Degree from Northern Illinois University in 1982, a Master of Laws in Natural Resources and Environmental Law and Policy in 2001 from the University of Denver College of Law.  In addition, he received a Master’s Degree in Legal Administration in 1977.  He graduated from Western Michigan University with Cum Laude distinction in 1976.

Areas of Legal Emphasis:  Mr. Sutherland has an advanced law degree, and provides a unique, experiential approach to Environmental, Natural Resources, Land Use, Zoning and Energy Law.  He also has an area of extensive knowledge in structured settlements law, as well as being certified as a Collaborative Divorce Practitioner and a Certified Mediator.

Present and Former Memberships:  Mr. Sutherland is a member of the Zuni Pueblo Bar, the Environmental Law Institute, the American Management Association and the American Bar Association Section on Environmental and Natural Resources Law.  In addition, he is active in volunteer work in the natural resources and environmental communities.

Prior Associations and Experience:  Mr. Sutherland has worked as an Administrator in law firms, legal support businesses and nonprofit agencies for over 20 years.
